Softening Spaces with Plantings
Plants have a way of drawing the eye, so they are ideal for softening hardscape areas as well as the sharp lines of a building or a structure such as a fence. While some plants are utilized to create a visual boundary, others are incorporated to camouflage severity in the landscape.
A brick patio or stone walkway feels less welcoming without the use of plants to finish off the design of the space. A large garden bed at the corner of a house blends the two sides of the foundation, unifying the space rather than amplifying a sharp separation.
Like a decorative pillow or throw adds softness and texture in interior design, plants can serve the same purpose in garden design. Choosing the right plants, being mindful of shape, size, color and texture is a key part of creating a space that feels natural and cohesive.
