Evergreens are the backbone of great garden design and with the multitude of colors, textures and sizes there are some for every garden. Whether you need a tall arborvitae for privacy screening or a small boxwood to create a low hedge, evergreens provide a structural element and year round interest in your garden.
Today, many designers are creating entire spaces to harness the beauty of evergreens. By mixing the dark, leathery leaves of hollys and laurels with the airy golden or blue foliage in cypress and junipers, evergreen spaces are a standout that rival the most stunning flower bed. They lend themselves to a more simple, modern design aesthetic while still feeling lush and cultivated.
If opting for a more traditional design, backing a mixed flower border with evergreens is a classic choice with endless possibilities. A drift of groundcover evergreens can also be an amazing layer in the front of the bed or perhaps a structured topiary in a middle layer, rounding a corner is the focal point the space needs. Regardless of how you utilize evergreens or how many you have, the key to using them well is varying shapes and textures. With thoughtful design, evergreens are an essential element of the garden space.
