Flower gardens often get the lions share of attention, but we shouldn't overlook the the plants that add a lush and elegant beauty to our shady spaces. By mixing varieties of foliage textures and colors, we can create an interesting and cohesive area that is calming to the eye without feeling boring or overly contrived.
The softness of a fern paired with a more structured Hosta leaf provides visual balance. For additional color, variegated plants or plants with a purple or deep maroon leaf are the perfect substitute for large colorful flowers. Even the variation of green colored leaves, from the deepest evergreen to the brightest chartreuse or a gentle blue will create a seasons long interest that no perennial flower can rival.
The key to creating these stunning gardens is to layer the design appropriately, not necessarily trying to add all of the elements to the same space. With thoughtful planning a shady spot can be the most tranquil and beautiful room in your garden.
